I just finished completely updating my guest bedroom and am at a point where I just need to unwind and relax before taking on my next project. I thought about how it sometimes can be the smallest, simplest things that create a sense of calm and comfort. These little habits don’t take much time, but they’ve been making such a difference in my daily life.
1. A five-minute nightly reset
At the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is clean, but I’ve found that just five minutes of tidying: putting pillows back in place, loading the dishwasher, and wiping counters, makes a big difference in my mood when I wake up in the morning. It’s so nice to come downstairs and be greeted with a clean living space. It’s a small act but really sets the tone for the rest of the day!
2. Opening the blinds first thing
First thing I do when I come downstairs is open the curtains and let in the natural light. Even on gloomy and rainy days, it feels so refreshing to have light leak into the living spaces, or even just to be able to view what the day is looking like outside. I feel more awake and it encourages me to start my day off right by moving with intention. This simple act makes my home feel bigger and brighter!
3. Fresh dish towels on rotation
This one might sound overly simple, but there’s something about pulling out a crisp, clean dish towel that makes the kitchen feel instantly refreshed. I love to rotate these seasonally as well and that may be another fun excuse to go to Home Goods 😉
4. Lamps over overheads
There’s a huge difference between the harsh glow of a ceiling light and the soft, cozy glow of a lamp. Lately, I’ve been skipping the overhead lights in the evenings and instead turning on small lamps around the house. The softer light instantly makes the space feel more relaxed, and just gives a much more cozy vibe. It’s such an easy switch, but it completely changes the atmosphere!
5. Lighting a candle after dinner
This little ritual has quickly become one of my favorites. Once dinner is cleaned up and the kitchen reset, I light a candle and get snuggled in a blanket. It makes the house smell good and adds warmth to the room. It’s a simple practice, but it signals to my brain that it’s time to slow down and enjoy the evening.
Closing Thoughts
None of these habits take more than a few minutes, but together they’ve created a home that feels calmer and more nurturing. They’re reminders that we don’t always need a big change to notice a difference — sometimes it’s the smallest shifts that help us feel more grounded in our space.
Maybe try adding just one of these into your week and see what changes for you. Sometimes peace at home comes from the tiniest details.
